Here’s What I Don’t Get (Global Statistics)

A lot of ignorant people in politics want to quash gay rights. Hate crimes against gays and lesbians are committed every day. But here are some statistics:
  1. 5-10% of the world population is gay.
  2. About 12% of the world does not have safe drinking water.
  3. 13.6% of the world suffering from hunger every day.
  4. About 16% of the world lives in slums, and the number is expected to rise to 33% by 2030.
  5. 16.3% of America does not have health insurance.
  6. 20% of the world is illiterate.
  7. 27% of the world is living on less than $2 a day.
  8. 46% of children are underweight in India.
  9. About 54% of Africa does not have safe drinking water.
  10. In Africa, over 90% of people infected with AIDS have no treatment.

Attention politicians of the world: There are bigger issues at stake than your own petty bigotry and hatred. Stop the prejudice. Adapt. And let’s move forward together, united.

I commend PBS

For making tonight’s Out in America special. The show is a documentary which highlights gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender life stories and was hailed as “uplifting, funny, and highly respectful” (Terrence Meck, Huffington Post). The show is extremely relevant and needed in spreading tolerance, but it makes me especially happy because it’s on PBS, which is paid for by viewers and by the government. As an unfortunate side note, NPR/PBS is currently in danger of being canceled as a network because the government is cutting spending (similar to the cuts that got rid of funding for Planned Parenthood). Because of funding cuts, this amazing programming is endangered. The future of this programming is currently uncertain.
